There’s something about a road trip in New Zealand.

Maybe it’s the way the mountains appear around every corner. Maybe it’s the sheep. (So. Many. Sheep.) Or maybe it’s the freedom of pulling over whenever you damn well please—which, let’s be honest, will be approximately every twenty minutes because the scenery is that ridiculous.

I’ve lost count of how many road trips Brian and I have done around this country. With the kids. Without the kids. In summer. In winter.
And the one thing I’ve learned?

Your choice of car rental in NZ can make or break your entire trip.

So let’s talk about getting you on the road, shall we?

Why You Need a Car in New Zealand

I love a good bus tour. I do. But New Zealand was literally designed for road trips.

The country is long and thin, the roads wind through landscapes that don’t look real, and the best stuff—the hidden waterfalls, the random quirky cafes, that viewpoint you weren’t expecting—is almost always off the main tourist route.

Whether you’re here for two weeks or two months, whether you’re just visiting or planning to move to New Zealand, a car gives you freedom.
Freedom to chase the weather.
Freedom to stop at the farm stand selling the best apricots of your life.
Freedom to change your mind halfway through the day and drive somewhere completely different.

Plus, have you seen our airports?

Renting from Auckland International Airport and driving straight into the countryside is practically a rite of passage.

The Big Question: Which Rental Company Should You Choose?

I get asked this constantly. And my answer is always the same: it depends on what kind of traveller you are.

Do you want the comfort of a big, reliable name? Or do you want to compare every single option and find the absolute best deal?

That’s why I work with two different affiliates—because they serve two different types of travellers. Let me break it down for you.
Let’s talk about DiscoveryCars and Hertz.

While DiscoverCars is a search engine/aggregator and Hertz is a direct supplier platform, comparing the two different types of booking sites is the best way for you, the traveller, to understand your options.

#1: Hertz – The “I Want It Easy” Choice

Best for: Travellers who want a familiar name, physical locations everywhere, and the peace of mind that comes with a global brand.

Hertz is one of the biggest names in the game for a reason. They’ve been doing this forever. When you book with Hertz, you know exactly what you’re getting.

Until July 2026, you can save 25% off your NZ Car Hire with Hertz. Go here to find out more!

Why you might choose Hertz:

  • Locations everywhere. Airport desks in every major city, town centres, you name it. If you break down or have an issue, there’s always a branch nearby.

  • Fleet consistency. The Corolla you rent in Auckland will be the same as the Corolla you’d rent in Chicago. No surprises.

  • One-way rentals. Picking up in Auckland and dropping off in Queenstown? Easy. Hertz handles this seamlessly.

  • The peace of mind factor. For nervous drivers, first-timers, or anyone who just wants things to work, Hertz delivers.

The downside? You pay for that reliability. Hertz isn’t usually the cheapest option on the market.

When to book Hertz: If you want certainty, if you’re doing a one-way rental, or if you’re a bit anxious about driving in a new country and want the safety net of a massive company behind you.

#2: DiscoverCars – The “I Want the Best Deal” Choice

Best for: Budget-conscious travellers, comparison shoppers, and anyone who wants to see ALL the options in one place.

DiscoverCars is what Brian and I use most often. Why? Because they’re a comparison site. They search dozens of local and international companies—including Hertz, actually—and show you the best prices side by side.

Why you might choose DiscoverCars:

  • You see everything. Local Kiwi companies, budget brands, the big names—all on one screen.

  • The prices are genuinely good. Like, embarrassingly good sometimes. I’ve found rentals for half of what the big names charge directly.

  • No nasty surprises. They’re transparent about insurance, mileage limits, and extra fees.

  • Local gems. Some of my favourite rental experiences have been with tiny local companies I’d never have found without DiscoverCars. The guy who met us at the airport with the car gave us a hand-drawn map of his favourite beaches and refused to take a tip. Pure gold.

The downside? You need to read the fine print. Because you’re comparing multiple companies, terms and conditions vary. Always check what’s included.

When to book DiscoveryCars: If you want the best price, if you’re renting for a longer period, or if you want to support local Kiwi businesses.

Hertz vs DiscoverCars: Which One Wins?

Honestly? Neither. They serve different purposes.

Hertz DiscoverCars
One brand, one experience Compares dozens of companies
Physical locations everywhere Mix of big names and local gems
Higher price, maximum certainty Lower price, more variety
Great for one-way rentals Great for budget travellers
Book directly with a global giant See all options in one place

Our personal rule of thumb: If we’re doing a short rental (a few days) or a one-way trip, we check Hertz first.
If I’m renting for a week or more, we always go to DiscoverCars first.

What About Campervans?

Ah, the great campervan debate.

I’ll be honest: we’ve done both. We’ve rented cars and stayed in motels. We’ve rented campervans in New Zealand and slept in DOC campsites.
Both are brilliant. Both suit different trips.

A car gives you flexibility and speed. You’re not lumbering around in a big vehicle, you can park anywhere, and you’re not committed to sleeping where you drive.

A campervan gives you freedom from the need to book accommodation. You can chase the weather, change your plans last minute, and wake up to views that no hotel could offer.

If you’re torn between the two, ask yourself: do I want to cover ground quickly (in a car) or do I want to slow down and camp (in a campervan)?

And if you’re planning to move to New Zealand with your family, you might even find yourself considering buying a vehicle rather than renting.

Plenty of Americans living in New Zealand started their journey with a rental car and a dream.

Before You Book Your Car Hire: Things to Consider

Automatic or manual?
New Zealand drives on the left (I know, I know, it feels weird at first). Most rental cars are manual unless you specifically request automatic. If you can’t drive manual, BOOK EARLY. Automatics go fast.

Insurance.
Get it. Seriously. New Zealand roads can be unpredictable—more on that in my driving tips below—and you do not want to be paying for a broken windshield out of pocket. Both Hertz and DiscoveryCars offer insurance options. Take them.

One-way fees.
Picking up in Auckland and dropping off in Queenstown? Dreamy. But check the one-way fee before you book. Sometimes it’s worth it. Sometimes you’re better off doing a loop.

Child seats.
If you’re travelling with little ones, book the seats when you book the car. They’re not always available last minute.

GPS vs your phone.
Your phone will work fine most of the time, but there are dead zones. Download offline maps before you go. Trust me on this.

Why Car Rentals Fit Perfectly Into Your NZ Plans

Whether you’re here for a holiday or here to stay, a car opens doors.

If you’re exploring the idea of moving from the United States to New Zealand, renting a car lets you explore different regions properly. You can spend a week in Northland, a week in the Coromandel, a week in Hawke’s Bay—and actually get a feel for each place before you commit.

If you’re here on a New Zealand skilled migration visa and job hunting, a car is essential. Public transport doesn’t reach everywhere. Trust me, you don’t want to miss an interview because the bus didn’t turn up.

If you’re navigating the tricky world of visas—maybe you’ve had a NZ visa denied and you’re reapplying, or you’re exploring the New Zealand partner visa route, or you’re over 55 and wondering about the New Zealand Age waiver visa—having wheels gives you freedom to visit lawyers, sort paperwork, and just clear your head with a drive when it all gets too much.

And if you’re one of the many considering a more permanent move, you’ll want to read about why people leave New Zealand as well as why they stay. A road trip is the perfect way to figure out which side of that fence you land on.

Don’t Forget: You Can Combine Car Rentals with Housesitting

Here’s a hot tip from someone who’s done it many times.

Book a car rental for the first week or two of your trip. Use it to explore, to get your bearings, to visit potential neighbourhoods if you’re planning to relocate to New Zealand.

Then, once you’ve got a feel for the place, settle into a housesit somewhere. Use my Trusted House Sitters guide to find free accommodation in exchange for pet care.

We’ve done this all over the country—Napier, Wellington, Wanaka, you name it. You park the car, you cuddle the cats, you live like a local for a while.

Then, when you’re ready to move on? Rent another car. Rinse and repeat.

It’s how we’ve seen more of New Zealand than most Kiwis have.

Speaking of Exploring… Have You Done a Hobbit Tour?

If you’re renting a car, you have no excuse not to visit the Shire.

Hobbit tours in New Zealand are magical even if you’re not a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan (I wasn’t. I cried anyway).

Having your own car means you can combine Hobbiton with other Waikato adventures—the glowworm caves in Waitomo, the gardens in Hamilton, the whole lot.

Read my full Hobbit Tour of New Zealand guide here for all the details.

Car Rentals and Your NZ Relocation

If you’re reading this because you’re planning a move, not just a holiday, a car rental is often the first step.

You arrive at the airport, you pick up your rental, and you drive into your new life. It’s terrifying and exhilarating in equal measure.

I’ve heard from so many readers over the years:

Your rental car isn’t just transport. It’s your key to figuring out where you belong.

Practical Stuff: New Zealand Cities and Driving

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make is whether to base yourself in the North Island or South Island. Or both.

Read my guide to New Zealand South Island or North Island if you’re torn. And once you’ve decided, check out my breakdown of cities in New Zealand to help you choose.

A rental car lets you visit them all. Wellington’s cool vibe, Christchurch’s resilience, Dunedin’s Scottish charm, Nelson’s sunshine—you can taste test each one before you commit.

Ready to Book Your NZ Car Rental?

Whether you go with the certainty of Hertz or the comparison power of DiscoverCars, you’re making the right choice. A car gives you New Zealand on your own terms.

Book your rental early—especially if you’re travelling in summer (December-February) or if you need an automatic. Cars go fast.

Don’t forget your Travel insurance! (Safety Wing is the only company we recommend)

And whatever you do, leave time for the spontaneous stops. The random lookout. The pie shop that looks amazing. The beach you weren’t expecting.

That’s what road trips are for.
