Meet Maile and Brian. Two Americans Living in NZ

We first connected with Maile and Brian through our NZ Ahead Community, a supportive group for those considering or currently navigating their journey to New Zealand.

During our time together, they openly shared the highs and lows of what it was like for them as Americans moving to New Zealand.

They share their first six months (both good and bad) of living in this beautiful country.

Settling Down in Dunedin, New Zealand

Maile and Brian have rented a lovely three-bedroom home just two blocks from the beach for approximately $510 NZD per week.

Compare that price to similar homes in the U.S. near the beach, and you’ll find them significantly more affordable here.

This is a delightful perk for many Americans moving to New Zealand—the quality of life at a lower cost!

Maile’s Career: A Nurse’s Perspective

Maile works as a mental health nurse specializing in elderly care, where there’s a high demand for professionals in New Zealand.

She shared that she earns about $78,000 NZD per year—roughly $36 NZD per hour—which is competitive compared to what she earned in the U.S.

The good news?

She feels her take-home pay is higher in New Zealand due to lower taxes and expenses.

For those Americans that move to New Zealand, this is an important consideration: while you might initially compare your salary back home to your new one, it’s essential to focus on how your income measures up against the cost of living here.

Maile’s experience highlights that you can not only earn well but potentially save more due to lower living costs and fewer workplace demands.

Brian’s Transition to Life in New Zealand

On the flip side, Brian is currently working remotely with a U.S. based software company.

He wakes up at around 3:30 AM to start his workday, which comes with its own challenges. This has affected his social life, as most Kiwis aren’t available to hang out in those early hours!

While making friends in new environments can be daunting for anyone, especially someone working odd hours, Brian offers some great tips.

He encourages reaching out to local cafe owners and utilizing social media to connect with others who may also be new to Dunedin.

The Emotional Rollercoaster

The journey hasn’t been all sunshine and roses.

Maile candidly shared her struggles during the initial weeks, feeling overwhelmed by the new healthcare system and missing familiar support networks.

Transitioning to a different culture, even one that speaks the same language, can lead to feelings of isolation.

However, she emphasizes that this emotional journey is normal for many Americans living in New Zealand. It’s essential to embrace the rollercoaster feelings of joy, anxiety, and excitement.

Embracing the Kiwi Lifestyle

Both Maile and Brian have found joy in the Kiwi way of life, stating that they finally feel a sense of belonging in Dunedin.

The kindness and respect exhibited by the local community have made a significant impact on their adjustment.

They appreciate the slower pace of life and the general sense that people value work-life balance, which is a refreshing change from the hustle culture back in the U.S.

Bonus Tips for Americans Moving to New Zealand

  1. Give Yourself Time: Allow yourself to adjust emotionally and physically. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed!
  2. Connect with Community: Whether through social media or local groups, building a support network is vital.
  3. Focus on the Positives: While exploring your new surroundings, remember to find joy in the small things, like local coffee shops or scenic views.
