Hobbit Tour of New Zealand: Step Inside the Shire, My Precious!
Confession time. Before I moved to New Zealand, I wasn’t even a Lord of the Rings fan.
I know…Embarrassing. I’d seen the films, but I wasn’t obsessed. Not like my kids and husband.
Then I actually visited Hobbiton.
And oh. My. Gandalf.
I cried. Actual tears. There’s something about walking through those tiny green doors, past the colourful round windows, up to the Party Tree… it hits you. This isn’t just a movie set. It’s pure, distilled magic.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan who can quote every line of Gollum or just someone who appreciates beautiful countryside and a damn good pint, a Hobbit tour of New Zealand needs to be on your bucket list.
And honestly? You can’t come all the way to Aotearoa and not visit the Shire. That would just be silly.

Why a Hobbiton Tour is Non-Negotiable
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: New Zealand isn’t just a country; it’s a mood. And nowhere is that mood more perfectly captured than in the rolling green hills of Matamata.
The Hobbiton Movie Set isn’t one of those “look but don’t touch” experiences. You genuinely walk through the hobbit holes. You see the washing on the line. You stand under the Party Tree.
It’s real. It’s ridiculous.
It’s wonderful.
Plus, it’s one of the few places in the world where being short is considered an advantage. Finally, my time has come
.
Which Hobbit Tour is Right for You? Let’s Break It Down
You’ve decided to go. Brilliant.
Now the big question: do you rent a car in New Zealand and drive yourself, or let someone else do the navigating while you stare dreamily out the window?
I’ve done both, and honestly? They’re both great. But if you want my honest opinion, the tours from Auckland take the stress out of the day completely.
You sit back, watch the countryside roll by, and someone else deals with the New Zealand driving (which, let’s be honest, involves a lot of sheep on the road).
Here are the two tours I have taken, loved and recommend.
Both are brilliant.
Which one you choose depends on how much of a hobbit you want to be.
Option 1: The Ultimate Day Out from Auckland (With Feast!)
Tour: Auckland: Hobbiton Movie Set Day Trip with Festive Lunch
This, my friends, is the full monty. The “I’ve come all this way, and I’m doing it properly” tour.
What happens:
You’ll be picked up in Auckland (at the Sky City coach terminal, nice and easy) and bundled onto a swish, modern coach with WiFi.
Then you’ll wind your way through the lush Waikato countryside, past farms and rolling hills, until you arrive in Matamata. But you’re not just dropped at the gate. Oh no.
You’ll be handed over to an official guide who knows everything. And I mean everything. They’ll walk you through the entire set, showing you Bag End (Bilbo’s house!), the Party Tree, the bridge, the whole glorious lot.
You’ll poke your head into hobbit holes, hear the behind-the-scenes gossip, and feel your inner child squeal with joy.
The bit that got me:
At the end of the tour, you walk into The Green Dragon Inn. A real, working pub built for the movies. And guess what? You get a free drink. A proper Hobbit ale, a cider, or a ginger beer for the little ones.
Sitting by the fire in the Green Dragon, sipping a pint, watching the sun hit the hills… it’s a moment. Honestly. I nearly welled up.
And then… THE FEAST.
After your drink, you’re ushered into the Party Marquee for a full, themed, Hobbit-style lunch. It’s a buffet, it’s hearty, it’s absolutely delicious.
Think roasted meats, fresh breads, salads, the works. You’ll eat like a hobbit. You’ll probably feel like a hobbit. Second breakfast dreams do come true.
Why choose this Hobbit tour?
Because you want the full experience. You want the transport sorted. You want the history. You want the drink. You want the FEAST. This is the VIP, “treat yourself” option.
It’s the one I recommend to everyone who asks, “What’s the best way to do Hobbiton?”

Option 2: The Classic Guided Tour of the Movie Set
Tour: Hobbiton Movie Set Guided Tour
If you’re already based in the area (maybe you’re staying in Rotorua or Tauranga, or even doing a spot of housesitting in New Zealand), or you have your own wheels, this is your golden ticket.
What happens:
You’ll meet your guide at the Shire’s Rest Cafe (the official starting point in Matamata). From there, you’ll hop on one of their shuttle buses and be transported directly into Middle-earth.
The guided tour itself is exactly the same as the one described above. You’ll get the same expert guide, the same wander through the hobbit holes, the same chance to stand outside Bag End and pretend you’re about to have a very unexpected party.
You’ll also still get that drink at the Green Dragon Inn. Because honestly, can you imagine going all that way and not having a drink in the Green Dragon? I cannot.
The difference?
You’re not getting the big festive lunch in the marquee, and you’re not getting the coach transport from Auckland.
This tour is just the set experience (with the drink). You arrange your own way there and back. Driving in New Zealand
Why choose this one?
You’re already in the region and have transport. Or, you’re on a tighter budget but still refuse to miss out on the main event. Or, maybe you’re planning to combine Hobbiton with other adventures in the area, like exploring Rotorua’s geothermal wonders.
It’s Hobbiton, pure and simple. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
So, Which Hobbit Tour in New Zealand Is It?
| Tour | Best For | Includes Transport? | Includes Feast? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland Day Trip with Festive Lunch | The full, stress-free, treat-yourself experience | ✅ Yes from Auckland | ✅ Yes |
| Classic Guided Tour (from Matamata) | Independent travellers, those already nearby | ❌ No (you drive) | ❌ No (just the drink) |
Both get you into the set, both get you the expert guide, both get you that magical drink in the Green Dragon. It’s just about how much of a production you want to make of it.

Practical Stuff You Need to Know (Because I Love You)
Best time to go in New Zealand?
Hobbiton is beautiful year-round, but honestly? Go in spring (September-November) or autumn (March-May) .
The hills are that perfect shade of green, the weather is mild, and the crowds are thinner than in summer. Winter can be moody and atmospheric (and wet), summer is lush but busy.
The best time to visit New Zealand is all the time, but
My personal favourite? Autumn. The light is golden, and the Shire looks like it’s glowing.
Where to stay?
Matamata itself is a cute little town, but many people visit as a day trip from Rotorua (an hour away), Tauranga (also an hour), or Auckland (a couple of hours).
If you’re planning to explore more of the North Island, Rotorua is a great base. If you’re comparing cities in New Zealand, Auckland gives you the most options, but the Waikato region (where Hobbiton lives) has its own quiet charm.
What to wear:
COMFORTABLE SHOES. I cannot stress this enough. You will be walking. A lot. Up hills, down hills, along paths.
Also, New Zealand weather is a fickle beast. Dress in layers and bring a rain jacket, even if the sun is shining when you leave.
Trust me on this.
Can I take photos?
YES. A thousand times yes. Take all the photos. Stand in every doorway. You’ll want them. The light in the Shire is something else.
More Than Just a Movie Set
Here’s the thing nobody tells you. Hobbiton isn’t just for fans.
There’s something about the place. It’s peaceful. It’s beautiful. It’s a reminder that simple things—good food, good drink, a cozy home, beautiful countryside—are the things that actually matter.
Plus, the cities in New Zealand are wonderful, but this? This is the countryside New Zealand does best. Rolling, green, impossibly pretty.
